![]() Death isn’t a big deal, continuing on your path just a reload away. In recent years however, a new – or some would say old – philosophy has taken hold in a growing number of games. Survival is no longer guaranteed in those titles, it is a thing the player has to actually work for. Death in these games has consequences that can’t be rectified with a simple quickload. Players have to pay much closer attention to the game, have to put a lot of effort into their characters well being, and are not pampered in any way. As such, these survival games are a lot harder, and usually less accessible and less appealing to a broad audience, however they have a steadily growing number of avid fans. This trend harkens back to the old days of gaming, when games were not aimed at the broadest possible audience, when real men were still real men, hairy chests and all. It is in and on itself a part of the trend towards harder games in general that for example spawned titles like Super Meat Boy. To the days of Rogue, a game that birthed the roguelike genre. It harkens back to a harsher age. A darker age. Here are its champions. Note: Keep in mind that this list pertains only to survival games—ones in which you have to struggle to find resources and survive for as long as you can, as it were. This is in contrast to survival horror games, which consist mainly of running away from a deadly opponent that no amount of bravery or skill can hope to overcome. If you like this list, you’ll probably enjoy our list of the best dinosaur games.#1. The Flame in the Flood. Playing the role of a little girl and her companion dog, you must navigate through the treacherous and unforgiving waters of a land washed over by a flood. With few resources to spare, you have to find and forage what you can and seek shelter, or risk death by exposure. The game’s a lot more difficult than its visuals indicate.#1. Crashlands. Quite unlike the other games on this list, Crashlands is a bit more forgiving in that you won’t die permanently, and everything you do in the game is an effort towards unlocking even more content. Even though there’s no permadeath, you’re still going to have to spend a lot of your time trying to survive and foraging materials to craft new weapons and utilities to ensure that you have the best gear available for every possible challenge.#1. Subnautica. Subnautica invites players to dive deep beneath the ocean’s surface on an alien planet. It’s an underwater world filled with peril and wonder, providing players with endless opportunities to discover beautiful new environments and forms of life. Players can craft equipment, pilot futuristic submarines, terraform the terrain, and explore–all the while trying to survive.#1. Reign of Kings. Chop down trees, hunt wildlife, and live the life of a medieval peasant in Reign of Kings. Players can forge weapons and armor, construct massive castles, and participate in large- scale siege warfare against opposing groups of players–or armies. Players may form guilds and attempt to conquer the medieval world.#1. Zombi. Originally released as Zombi U for the Nintendo Wii U, this Ubisoft title introduces actual elements of the survival genre into the zombie apocalypse. Players take on the role of a random civilian who managed to survive the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse in London. In it, your goal is to survive for as long as you can and make your way through the city. If you succumb to death, you respawn as another civilian, and may perhaps find yourself fighting against your former self.#1. Rust. This game provides perhaps one of the best illustrations of what might truly happen in a post- disaster world. Players have to tend to typical survival needs of hunger, thirst, and shelter while either cooperating or fending off other players. Like Day- Z it is known for having one of the most bizarrely fickle communities in gaming, oscillating wildly between hostility and heart warming displays of humanity at any give moment.#9 ARK: Survival Evolved. This Early Access title you must hunt, grow and harvest crops, craft items, build shelters, the usual: but with DINOSAURS. Really, what more do you need to to know. Over time the player character, a man or woman stranded on a “mysterious island”, learns to fend for themselves as well as tame and ride these magnificent beasts. You can kill them too but frankly, we’re more interested in pretending to be pre- history Mario astride our mega- Yoshi.#8 The Forest. In The Forest, you play a lone survivor of a passenger jet crash and kind of like the TV series LOST, you find yourself in a mysterious forest battling to stay alive against a society of creepy cannibalistic mutants who want nothing more than to devour you. You have to build, explore, and survive in this terrifying first- person horror simulator.#7 NEO Scavenger. Ever wanted to kill someone with a crummy crowbar, steal their pants, cut the flesh from their corpse and throw it into your kiddie sled filled with broken bottles, alcohol and firearms to later cook and consume it alongside some jelly beans and dirty water? Okay, if you’ve ever wanted to do that (which you shouldn’t do because it’s preeetty illegal) then NEO Scavenger may just be the game for you. This hardcore post- apocalyptic survival game is incredibly addictive, and playing it makes for some strange and hilarious stories.#6 the. Hunter: Primal. Players will hunt, explore, and survive a realistic prehistoric environment in the. Hunter: Primal. Developed by the makers of Just Cause series, the. Hunter: Primal features a wide open Cretaceous environment populated by some of the most fearsome dinosaurs the world has ever seen, ranging from the Triceratops and the Velociraptor to the fearsome T- Rex.#5 Shelter & Shelter 2. In the Shelter series of games, players assume the role of a mother animal who must nurture her offspring in a harsh, and unforgiving environment. As a badger in the first game, and as a lynx in the second, players must struggle to survive out in the wilderness while raising a litter of baby animals. Players undertake various activities, including hunting to kill and feed, making sure the cubs drink water, and lifting and carrying cubs to safety. The second game is much larger in scope than the first, offering more freedom than ever before. Weather and seasons change, and the world offers many challenges.#4 Minecraft. At its core, Minecraft is about building things. Yet, the game offers an aptly named Survival Mode that forces you basically to brave the wilds and survive for as long as you can. Dying doesn’t equal the end of your life, but it does mean you’ll lose everything you have in your inventory, and then some. The game gives you good incentive to stay alive, and forces you to collect resources, build structures, and do battle against the creepers and zombies who would like nothing better than to lay ruin to your creations. There’s even a need to maintain your hunger levels and continuously explore the land in an effort to stay alive.#3 Don’t Starve. The goal of Don’t Starve is as the name suggests—to not starve to death. The game asks you simply to not starve, find food for yourself, and have some form of light at the end of every day and survive the night. The game just gets more complex from there, as you are able to scavenge a wide variety of resources to further improve your odds of surviving, and you can even develop new items through science. In many ways, the game takes the concept of survival to its very core by asking you simply to survive, while offering you adventures and the chance to do something beyond feeding yourself.#2 The Long Dark. The Long Dark is an introspective, exploration- focused survival simulation set in the Northern North American wilderness in the aftermath of a global disaster that decimates much of humankind. Players must brave the elements and other survivors while hunting for supplies, exploring the world, and answer the question as to how far they’ll go to survive.#1 Day ZDay Z is a mod for Arma 2 that’s managed to gain a cult following all on its own because of its gameplay, which involves surviving the wilderness—which consists mainly of zombies—and other players. Players must find sustenance in order to survive, and doing so requires that they make forays into the city, which is, as you can already guess, filled with the walking dead. The game makes full use of Arma 2 as a realistic combat simulation, so you’ll be able to bleed out or lose the use of your legs if you shoot yourself in the foot, for example. It has everything you could ever expect from a survival game, and like any true story of survival, it’s about man against man against the wild. The best Play. Station VR games for your shiny new headset. The Play. Station VR is well and truly in living rooms and Sony has done a nice job at getting indie devs on board alongside big names like Ubisoft and EA. If you're still on the fence, you can read our full Play. Station VR review. As for the games, you'll find the best of the bunch below, and we'll be continually revising this as more appear. Read this: Play. Station VR tips and tricks. Sony has revealed it shifted an impressive 9. There are also various bundles where you'll get the headset, Play. Station Camera and two Move controllers along with Play. Station VR Worlds and a Playroom VR digital download. We rate the rest: HTC Vive review . Some are PS4 titles which now have a VR mode, some were built specifically for virtual reality. Let us know what you're playing in the comments sections. Farpoint. This PSVR exclusive also happens to be the launch title for the new Aim Controller, which comes with vibration feedback and motion sensing. Think of Farpoint as a more modern version of classic arcade shooters like House of the Dead, except in VR and you're a space marine that's crash landed on a hostile alien planet. We've really enjoyed what we've played, but be warned that it's quite a short experience. One of you wears the VR headset, the rest have a 'manual' to help you defuse a ticking bomb within VR by telling you what to do. Expect it to feel fast and furious, especially if you're the one in the headset. For two to four players. But this is more than a side project; Psychonauts: In the Rhombus of Ruin has enough substance to go the distance (at least three hours, and that's if you're speeding through). The first- person update on the point- and- click genre has all the charm you'd expect from a game written by Tim Schafer, while the movement mechanics do well to avert any nausea problems. Be sure to check out our chat with Double Fine about bringing Psychonauts into virtual reality. RIGS Mechanized Combat League. RIGS sounds a little nutty at first. Through a combination of drivable combat robots, basketball and major league sports elements, you get a first- person multiplayer shooter that will likely be popular on Twitch. You're in a seated mech cockpit and you turn your head to aim, meaning it's well suited to the seated experience. There's deathmatch and football modes and 2. RIGS to choose from - you've just gotta get through that 3. The new Arkham game from Rocksteady Studios is already one of our favourite PS VR titles and sees you exploring iconic Gotham locations like the Batcave. The game focuses on Batman's skills as a detective, but don't worry, you'll still get plenty of opportunities to throw around some Battarangs. The story is a comic book- style murder mystery, with a fairly slow pace and dark mood. But interacting with other characters, rewinding time at crime scenes, putting on the Batsuit and fighting high above Gotham are all pretty thrilling in these gorgeous, detailed VR environments. With gameplay that might not last you more than an hour, you may think the price is high, but you won't feel shortchanged. The combination of intense, abstract visuals and music here is hard to beat in terms of immersion. A must download. 2. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Resident Evil is back, and it's better than the series has been in quite some time. Not only that, but the latest entry, Biohazard, lets you play entirely in VR for added scares. It's a great showcase of how PS VR can go the distance with a full- length game, a quality entry to the franchise, and damn terrifying to boot. Plonked into a series of tricky situations, you'll have to use your brains to come up with an exit strategy before it all goes to hell. Can you escape - or more pertinently, how many different ways can you die? The London Heist allows you to use the Play. Station Move controllers in both hands for added realism, so you can duck for cover, hang out of windows, smoke a cigar and manually reload your gun with clips, all while feeling like a total badass. Putting on your own cockney accent while you 'top' bad geezers is totally optional. There's only about 2. Free (with Play. Station VR Worlds - $3. A great choice to show scared family members what VR is like in a world that plays fast and loose with the definition of . The Move controllers are your hands, and your workspace is your toybox. Hours of fun guaranteed. You hit your Dual. Shock controller to match a drum beat as you would in a more relaxing Guitar Hero- style scenario. Ominous graphics pulse all around as you control a bug hurtling down a track. There are also obstacles and combos of rhythms to take down big bosses. Pretty damn unique. Eagle Flight a third- person game/experience of, well, flying as an eagle over the streets of Paris. Only there are no people, and animals roam the city. Multiplayer is fun with 3 v 3 'capture the prey' gameplay but the story missions and challenges start more serenely - collecting items, perfecting your tilting technique, gliding over rivers or swooping underground - before moving onto battles in the sky. There's also free roam if you just want to feel like you're flying for a while and admire the beaut CG view. Ubisoft has also made it cross- platform (as it will for its future VR lineup), meaning you can play with friends who have an Oculus Rift of HTC Vive. Down with both? But even if Stark Trek isn't your think, Bridge Crew is arguably the best showcase right now of what multiplayer VR can be, as you and three other people must work together to command the S. S. Aegis through the wonders and dangers of space. Play with Dual. Shock or Move controllers (the latter are more helpful) as you stack objects of varying weights, mirror laser beams around a course and demolish groups of 3. D shapes. You'll need a steady hand and some patience. Single and multiplayer, this is oddly relaxing. Also on Oculus Rift, EVE: Valkyrie is a fast- paced dogfight set in the EVE: Online universe. You can play against headset- wearing friends in short, fun sessions, swap ships and try out capture the flag modes. Plus, dying in this game is kind of magical. Just be warned - motion sickness might set in after a while. The lack of motion controls is a shame, and visually it's not among the best titles, but The Journey is still a great game of substantial length, making it a rare beast right now. Stick one of your friends into this first person survival shooter on the difficult level and watch them jump for some great . We don't want to ruin too much but if you're scared of clowns, zombies or old timey theme parks, you might not want to play this too close to bedtime$1. The motion is slower, because it's tanks, which reduces motion sickness, and the blocky graphics work well with Play. Station VR's tech limitations. You've also got a campaign and co- op mode for your money. It's a simple task of heading balls at (sometimes moving) targets, bombs, around 'goalies' etc that gets trickier and is one of the easiest to pass around to play. Read this: Headmaster convinced me simple VR can be addictive. It's a bit odd launching your head at a virtual ball at first but you'll soon get the hang of it. Most repeat plays at Wareable HQ so far. Arcade shooter Super Stardust has nine classic 'god view' modes as well as a special Invasion Zone VR mode that puts you in a cockpit shooting down enemies and picking up power ups and weapons while avoiding space debris. The best bit? You'll happily replay it again and again to get that high score up. It does what it says on the tin, really. Four players can urban golf, as robots, at once because it's all just crazy and silly – plus if big old buildings or other robots are in your way, the idea is that you smash them down to take your shot. Not an essential buy but silly nonetheless. Think Micro Machines but you're stood inside the track, watching the cars race past your face, over your head, and even underwater, which requires submerging your head. After getting a taste at E3 2. Superhot VRAt last, one of the best VR games is coming to PS VR. Superhot's unique mechanic means time only moves when you do, turning you into a total bullet- dodging badass. There's no firm date on this, but it'll be out some time in the summer. Trust us, if you haven't already played it, this one is going to be worth the wait. Skyrim VRAnother one we got to demo at E3 2. Skyrim is getting the full VR treatment on Play. Station this November. The game utilizes a teleport mechanic to let you move around, and we found it worked surprisingly well in our short playtime. It'll include all of the previous Skyrim add- ons too when it does arrive. Moss. You're a mouse, with a sword, exploring an enchanted wood. What's not to like? Teased at E3 2. 01. VR platformer game in the style of Lucky's Tale, and it looks filled with charm. Developer Polyarc says the game is still a while off completion. From what we've seen so far Moss promises to further diversify the PS VR's lineup of games, and that can only be a good thing. The Inpatient. Supermassive Games has announced a prequel to its horror game Until Dawn, which will put us inside a mental institute 6. It all looks very eerie and the teaser has left us with a lot of questions - but consider us onboard. Expect this one to land in 2. Golem. This is a Play. Station exclusive from Highwire Games and it looks damn interesting. You play as a girl controlling golems, via your eyes and movements, while creeping through ancient ruins filled with treasures. It's an interesting mechanic and we can't wait to see where they take it. Ace Combat 7. Namco Bandai's arcade flight Ace Combat series comes to the PS4 and VR with photorealistic graphics, authentic and futuristic aircraft to choose from and – no doubt – familiar dogfighting action. Dead Secret. As a journalist eager to make the headlines, you will embark on a journey with mysterious occurrences – all to find out who murdered Harris Bullard. LAST YEAR Trailer ? They are HERE .
